Call tracking and attribution

The short answer

Which ad, keyword or page made the phone ring?

For plumbers, law firms, clinics, dealers and most local services, the phone call is the conversion. Web analytics sees the click on the ad and then loses the trail when the visitor picks up the phone. Call tracking closes that gap by showing each visitor a tracking number tied to their source, then logging the call against it.

How it works in one paragraph

A script on your site swaps the phone number shown to each visitor for one from a pool (dynamic number insertion). When that number rings, the platform knows which session it belongs to, so it knows the source, campaign and often the keyword. The call is forwarded to your normal line, recorded if you choose, and sent back to Google Ads or your CRM as a conversion. Offline sources such as print or vehicle wraps get a fixed number each.

Two kinds of tool

  • Call-first platforms such as CallRail add recording, transcription, routing and conversation analysis around the call itself.
  • Lead-first platforms such as WhatConverts treat calls, forms, chats and transactions as one lead list, each with its source, and are built around proving which marketing produced qualified leads.

Both kinds cover the core job. Read CallRail vs WhatConverts for where they part ways, and how to track phone calls from Google Ads for the setup.

If what you need is a better phone system rather than attribution, see Aircall, KrispCall or Calilio: they handle routing, SMS and transcripts, but do not tie calls to ads. For offline media, a separate toll-free or vanity number per channel from 800.com shows which billboard, mailer or radio spot made the phone ring.

Side by side: best call tracking software and best virtual phone systems.

Not legal advice: recording calls needs every party's consent in several US states (California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Washington among them), and GDPR applies in the EU and UK.

Questions

Does call tracking hurt local SEO?
Not if the tracking number is swapped by script for visitors only and your real number stays in the page source, your Google Business Profile and your citations. Never publish a tracking number as your main listing number.
