Conversion rate optimisation and testing
The short answer
Why do visitors leave without converting, and what change would fix it?
On this page 8 sections
Analytics tells you that 97 visitors in 100 left without enquiring. Conversion rate optimisation is the work of finding out why and testing a change. The tools split into two jobs: diagnosis (heatmaps, session recordings, on-page surveys, chat transcripts) shows where and why people get stuck; testing (A/B and multivariate tests, landing page variants) proves whether a change helped.
Start with the question
| If the question is | Look first at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Where do visitors click, scroll and stop? | Heatmaps and recordings (Hotjar, Microsoft Clarity) | Shows behaviour on the page itself; Clarity is free. |
| Does version B convert better than version A? | An A/B testing tool or a landing page builder with testing | Only a controlled test separates the change from seasonality and traffic mix. |
| Our ads send traffic to a general page | A landing page builder (Leadpages, Unbounce) | A page per offer, matched to the ad, is the cheapest common win. |
| Visitors have questions before they buy | Live chat or an AI agent (Tidio) | Answers objections at the moment of doubt; transcripts double as research. |
| We want more email signups from existing traffic | Popups and forms (POWR, OptinMonster, Sender) | Exit-intent and timed offers capture visitors who would otherwise leave. |
The traffic problem
Most small sites do not have the traffic to A/B test small changes. At a 3% conversion rate, detecting a 20% relative lift with 95% confidence and 80% power needs roughly 14,000 visitors per variant. Below that, test bold changes (a new offer, a new page) rather than button colours, and lean on diagnosis tools instead. Check your numbers with the A/B test calculator and the conversion rate calculator before you start.
What to set up on day one
- Track the conversion itself as a GA4 key event, so every tool is judged against the same outcome. See how to track form submissions and leads.
- Install a free heatmap and recording tool on the pages that matter and watch 20 to 30 sessions before forming a hypothesis.
- Write each test down: the change, the metric, the minimum sample, the stop date. Stopping when a result looks good inflates false wins.
- Mask form fields and personal data in recordings, and cover recording tools in your consent banner where the law requires it.

Questions
- What is a good conversion rate?
- There is no single benchmark: conversion rates depend on the offer, the price, the traffic source and what counts as a conversion. Compare a page with its own history and with other pages on your site serving the same intent, rather than with an industry average.
- Can I A/B test with low traffic?
- Only large changes. At a 3% conversion rate a test needs about 14,000 visitors per variant to detect a 20% relative lift reliably. With less traffic, test a different offer or page, and use heatmaps, recordings and customer interviews to choose what to change.
- Is Google Optimize still available?
- No. Google sunset Optimize and Optimize 360 on 30 September 2023 and points users to third-party testing tools that integrate with GA4.
