CallRail vs Google Ads call tracking

By the editors of Analytics1.comLast reviewed 19 October 2026

The short answer

Google Ads' own call tracking is free and fine if Google Ads is your only paid channel and a call over a set length is a good enough signal. A platform such as CallRail costs money but attributes calls from every source, records and transcribes them, and lets you send only qualified calls to Google Ads, which gives Smart Bidding a better signal.

When the free option is enough

  • Google Ads is your only paid channel.
  • Most calls from ads are real enquiries, so call length is a fair proxy for quality.
  • You do not need recordings for training or disputes.

When a platform pays for itself

  • You also spend on Microsoft Ads, Meta, Local Services Ads or offline media.
  • A meaningful share of long calls are existing customers, suppliers or job seekers that you do not want bidding to chase.
  • You need to know which keywords produce booked jobs, not just calls.

You can run both during a trial. Keep Google's call conversion as secondary while the imported qualified-call conversion is primary, so calls are not counted twice.

Not legal advice. Recording calls requires notice, and in all-party consent states such as California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington, everyone's consent.

Questions

Is Google Ads call tracking free?
Yes. Call assets and website call conversions using a Google forwarding number cost nothing extra. They only cover Google Ads traffic, have no recordings, and judge quality by call length.
Can CallRail send calls to Google Ads?
Yes. CallRail integrates with Google Ads and can send calls as conversions, including only calls that meet rules you set or that you mark as qualified.
