Roundup · Call tracking
Best call tracking software for small businesses (2026)
The short answer
If phone calls are your main conversion and you want recordings and transcripts, look at CallRail or CallTrackingMetrics. If you need calls, forms and chats in one lead list with quality reporting, look at WhatConverts. If Google Ads is your only paid channel, Google's own free call tracking may be enough; large contact centres usually shortlist Invoca.

How to choose
| Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Do you need every source, or only Google Ads? | Google's free call conversions cover Google Ads only. A platform with dynamic number insertion attributes organic, social, email and offline calls too. |
| Are calls the only lead type? | If forms and chats matter as much, a lead-first tool keeps them in one list with their source. |
| Will you send qualified calls back to ad platforms? | Bidding on any call over 60 seconds chases existing customers and suppliers. Sending only calls marked qualified gives Smart Bidding a better signal. |
| Do you need recordings or transcripts? | Useful for training and disputes, but recording needs notice and, in all-party consent states, everyone's agreement. |
| Where are your numbers? | Local and toll-free number availability varies by country. Check before you commit. |
| Agency or in-house? | Agencies need sub-accounts, client-level billing and white-label reporting. |

The ranking
Ranked by the Analytics1 Score, from evidence read on each vendor’s own site on 19 October 2026. Affiliate partners and sponsors are scored by the same rules as everyone else: being a partner or buying a placement has no effect on a score or a position. Set-up mistakes that cost the most
- Publishing a tracking number as your main listing number. Keep your real number in the page source, Google Business Profile and directories; let the script swap it for visitors only.
- Counting calls twice. If you import platform calls into Google Ads, set Google's own call conversion to secondary.
- Too small a number pool. With too few numbers for your traffic, two visitors share a number and attribution blurs. Size the pool to concurrent visitors, as each vendor advises.
- Ignoring consent. Recording calls needs notice; California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Washington, among others, need every party's consent.
Call tracking or a better phone system?
Call tracking answers which ad made the phone ring. A cloud phone system answers who picks up and how fast. Some phone systems, such as 800.com and Calilio, include call reporting, but they do not swap numbers per visitor on your site. If you need both, see the best virtual phone systems.

Questions
- What is the cheapest way to track phone calls from ads?
- Google Ads call tracking is free but covers Google Ads only and judges quality by call length. Paid platforms start around the price of a monthly software subscription plus per-number and per-minute usage; WhatConverts listed its Call Tracking plan from $30 per month in October 2026.
- Does call tracking work for organic search traffic?
- Yes, if the platform uses dynamic number insertion. A script shows each website visitor a number tied to their session, so a call from someone who arrived from organic search is attributed to organic search.
