Social listening and brand monitoring

Social listening for small business: a practical start

By the editors of Analytics1.comLast reviewed 19 October 20262 min read

The short answer

Social listening means tracking public mentions of your brand, competitors and topics across social networks, news, blogs, forums, podcasts and review sites. A small business can start with a short keyword list, a weekly review, and a rule for who replies to what. The value comes from acting on mentions, not from the charts.

Key takeaways

  • Listening finds conversations you were not tagged in, across social, news, forums and reviews.
  • Start with brand, product, competitor and category phrases, plus exclusions for noise.
  • The value comes from a weekly routine of replying and passing complaints on, not from the charts.

Listening vs monitoring

Monitoring is watching your own accounts: comments, tags and messages. Listening goes wider and finds conversations you were not tagged in, such as a Reddit thread asking for a recommendation in your town, or a blog post comparing you with a competitor.

Your first keyword list

  1. Brand name, common misspellings, and product names.
  2. Founder or spokesperson names, if they are public figures in your niche.
  3. Two or three competitors.
  4. Category phrases people use when asking for help, such as "recommend a bookkeeper" plus your city.
  5. Exclusions for words that create noise (a brand name that is also a common word needs these most).

Reading the results

  • Volume: how many mentions, and whether a spike lines up with something you did.
  • Sentiment: tools classify mentions as positive, negative or neutral automatically. Check a sample by hand; sarcasm still trips them up.
  • Reach: an estimate of how many people could have seen a mention. Useful to triage, not a measured audience.
  • Sources: where the conversation happens, so you know where to spend reply time.

Measuring your own accounts

Listening covers what others say. For your own posts (reach, engagement, the best times to publish) the social management tools that schedule your content usually report on it too. Vista Social combines publishing, analytics, listening and review management; Later combines scheduling and performance insights with influencer campaign tracking.

A weekly routine

  1. Reply to negative mentions with a real fix, in public where appropriate.
  2. Answer recommendation requests helpfully, without a hard sell.
  3. Share or thank the best positive mentions.
  4. Note recurring complaints and send them to whoever owns the product or service.

Questions

Is Google Alerts enough for social listening?
It catches some news and web pages and costs nothing, but it misses most social platforms, forums and podcasts and has no sentiment analysis.
