Web and product analytics
How to self-host Matomo or Plausible analytics
The short answer
Matomo On-Premise runs on an ordinary PHP and MySQL/MariaDB server (Matomo's own sizing starts at 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD for up to 100,000 page views a month). Plausible Community Edition runs in Docker with ClickHouse and needs a CPU with SSE 4.2 or NEON and at least 2 GB of RAM. Either keeps the data on your own server, but you take on backups, updates and security.

Why self-host
- Data stays on infrastructure you control, which some public-sector, health and EU organisations require.
- No per-pageview pricing: the cost is the server.
- Freedom to customise, under open-source licences (Matomo GPL, Plausible CE AGPLv3).
Self-hosting does not remove consent obligations by itself: whether you need a banner depends on what the tool stores on the visitor's device and on local law. Not legal advice.
Matomo or Plausible
| Matomo On-Premise | Plausible Community Edition | |
|---|---|---|
| Feels like | A full GA-style suite: goals, ecommerce, segments, funnels (some premium plugins) | One-page dashboard of traffic, sources, pages and goals |
| Stack | PHP 8.1+ and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+ for Matomo 6 (PHP 8 and MySQL 5.5+ for Matomo 4.16 and 5) | Docker and Docker Compose; ClickHouse database |
| Minimum server | 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD up to 100k page views a month | 2 GB RAM recommended; CPU with SSE 4.2 or NEON |
| Releases | Regular releases you apply | Long-term release twice a year |
| Missing vs the vendor's cloud | Some features are paid plugins | Funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, sites API, data-centre IP bot filtering, Looker Studio connector |
| Licence | GPL | AGPLv3 |
Choose Matomo when you need GA-style depth on your own server. Choose Plausible CE when you want simple, fast, cookieless traffic stats and are comfortable with Docker.
Matomo sizing, from Matomo's own guidance
| Monthly page views | Recommended set-up |
|---|---|
| Up to 100,000 | 1 server: 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM, 50 GB SSD |
| Up to 1 million | 1 server: 4 CPU, 8 GB RAM, 250 GB SSD |
| Up to 10 million | App server 8 CPU, 16 GB RAM, 100 GB SSD plus a database server 8 CPU, 16 GB RAM, 400 GB SSD |
Where to host it
- A VPS with root access suits both. Plausible CE needs Docker, so pick a VPS rather than shared hosting. Hostinger sells Docker-ready VPS plans.
- A managed cloud server suits Matomo if you want the server patched and backed up for you: Cloudways runs PHP apps on DigitalOcean and other clouds with managed security and backups.
- Shared hosting can run a small Matomo but usually not its scheduled archiving (a cron job that pre-processes reports), which you want for anything beyond a few thousand visits a day.
- No server at all: both makers sell hosted versions (Matomo Cloud, Plausible), often the cheaper choice once you count your own time.
Running it safely
- Put it on its own subdomain (stats.example.com) with HTTPS.
- Automate daily database backups to storage off the server, and test a restore once.
- Apply security updates promptly; subscribe to the project's release notes.
- Set up Matomo's archiving cron job, or Plausible CE's documented upgrade process, before traffic grows.
- Exclude your own IPs, as you would in any tool.

Questions
- What are the server requirements for Matomo?
- Matomo 6.0.0 needs PHP 8.1 or newer and MySQL 8.0+ or MariaDB 10.6+, on Apache, Nginx, IIS or LiteSpeed. Matomo recommends a server with 2 CPU, 2 GB RAM and 50 GB SSD for up to 100,000 page views a month.
- What does Plausible Community Edition need to run?
- Docker and Docker Compose, a CPU that supports SSE 4.2 or NEON (required by ClickHouse), and at least 2 GB of RAM recommended, according to Plausible's community-edition repository.
- Is self-hosted Plausible the same as Plausible Cloud?
- No. Plausible says Community Edition lacks marketing funnels, user journeys, ecommerce revenue goals, SSO, the sites API, the Looker Studio connector and Cloud's data-centre IP bot filtering, and is released twice a year with community support only.
