Best product analytics tools for SaaS and apps (2026)

By the editors of Analytics1.comLast reviewed 19 October 2026

The short answer

Mixpanel and Amplitude are the established event-based product analytics platforms for funnels, retention and cohorts. PostHog bundles product analytics with session replay, feature flags and experiments, and can be self-hosted. Heap captures interactions automatically so you can define events later, and Pendo adds in-app guides. If you only need marketing traffic and conversions, GA4 is usually enough.

Analytics1 Score result

#1 product analytics tools for SaaS and apps, by the Analytics1 Score: Mixpanel (83/100)

  1. #2 Amplitude 79
  2. #3 PostHog 76

Scored from vendors’ own published pages with fixed weights; partner and sponsor status are not inputs. How the score works.

How to choose

  • Event volume pricing. Most tools price by events or tracked users per month. Estimate your volume before you compare.
  • Autocapture or a tracking plan. Autocapture gets data flowing fast; a written tracking plan gives clean, trustworthy events.
  • Identity. Can it merge anonymous visits with the signed-in user, across devices?
  • Warehouse. Export or sync to BigQuery or Snowflake if you will join product data with billing and CRM data.
  • Extras. Session replay, feature flags, experiments and surveys in the same tool reduce vendors.

If you are unsure you need one at all, read product analytics vs web analytics.

The ranking

Ranked by the Analytics1 Score, from evidence read on each vendor’s own site on 19 October 2026. Affiliate partners and sponsors are scored by the same rules as everyone else: being a partner or buying a placement has no effect on a score or a position. We have not tested these products in a live account.

    Pecan AI

    Not yet scored

Best for: predicting churn or lifetime value from the data you already collect

No-code predictive analytics that builds models such as churn and lifetime value from your existing data. A complement to product analytics, not a replacement.

Why this tool is not yet scored

We could not confirm enough on the vendor’s own pages to score it: a score needs core-job evidence, a pricing fact and at least three of the other five criteria. It is listed so you can still consider it. Vendors can send documentation through the contact form.

Retention is the report that matters

Signups and active users flatter. A cohort retention curve, the share of each signup month still active weeks or months later, tells you whether the product keeps people. Read cohort analysis explained and try the cohort retention calculator with your own numbers. Churn and payback live in SaaS metrics: LTV, CAC, payback and churn.

Self-hosting PostHog or another open-source tool needs a server; see self-hosting Matomo or Plausible for what that involves. Comparison: GA4 vs Mixpanel.

Questions

Is GA4 a product analytics tool?
GA4 is event-based and has funnel and cohort explorations, so it can answer basic product questions. Dedicated product analytics tools are faster for retention, cohort and user-level analysis and handle identity across devices better.
Which product analytics tools have free plans?
Mixpanel, Amplitude and PostHog all advertise free tiers, limited by event volume or tracked users. Limits change, so check each vendor's pricing page before you plan around them.
